Leaders: do you know what’s best for you?

by | Nov 11, 2024

Our work culture encourages ‘pushing through’ and ‘going above and beyond’; for leaders, it’s usually expected.

There are times when extra effort is needed, but you can’t run a long distance race at the pace of a sprinter.

Leaders risk burn out when they constantly over-extend themselves, neglecting their own wellbeing. The good news is this situation can be redeemed!

I regularly work with coaching clients to find the line between doing their best in a way that’s sustainable, and giving so much that they’re depleting their mental and physical resources. We then use this awareness to implements changes so they stay on the right side of that line.

In every case, change begins with awareness.

A tweet from @_DarkAcademia that reads: Your best is what you can do without harming your mental and physical health, not what you can accomplish when you disregard it.

You can start now with these questions:

What are the signs I’m doing my best without harming my physical or mental health?

What are the signs I’ve disregarded my health to prioritise my work?

Being able to distinguish between these two states is fundamentally important for a balanced life and sustainable career.
